Trust me, it's not worth it.
His quest continues in Baldur's Gate, where you can find him in his wife's house, and oh boy, it's the worst place of the entire game. Full of bugs and dumb decisions, and the quest reward is not even worth it.
If you have the chance to kill him back with the Zhentarim, do it.

No, fireball is currently one of the only ways to complete this quest. And that's if you're lucky with dice rolls. So nobody will be mad. I know I won't.
