This. There are some situations where an NPC will tell you not to kill someone and that's your cue to switch to knockout mode. In anything else it seems like knockout=killing.
No. Some Paladin classes have a Vow to not kill.
Paladins must use this feature.
It's specifically for that.
Like, only specifically exactly for that.
It's not. It's useful if you've accidentally started a fight and want to come back later.
It's also for role-play purposes whereas maybe you don't actually want to kill someone but you need them out of the way.
Then there's the different oaths that require you don't kill the innocent which can link back to the aforementioned situations where you've accidentally pissed someone off who isn't evil or an enemy.
It's a seldom used feature, but I wouldn't call it weird.
