Fixed: Joined co-op characters cannot be removed from the group aftwerwards.
Note that when a friend joins your game, it is not possible to remove the character they joined with from the group. He will permanently occupy a slot and cannot be left behind in the camp.

Please change this, Larian.

Wasn't this meant to be addressed in patch #1? At least they mentioned somewhere they're aware of the issue. It honestly looks like online multiplayer was an afterthought and they focused on the local co-op experience, hence no text chat.

It already destroyed our multiplayer game, so even if it were to get fixed, it'd be too little too late. Can only have your first time once, people moved on and started their own playthroughs, so there's no point in continuing. This very design decision alone soured me to BG3.

Really really stupid design!!!!!
I give up the game until they fix this!

Use different saves/playthroughs when playing single player and multiplayer.

just start again.

did one of the 4 people give up and not want to play anymore?

just start again.

pick up a new 4th but one of the original 3 drops out?

just start again.

have 6 different saves and do everything 6 times. Its easy!

just like dnd in real life where you have to put the game on hold for 4 months because your dm is being deployed in qatar

seriously though, you should be doing a singleplayer game that you can play by yourself to experience the story, and not put so much stock in the multiplayer games. the multiplayers are more to mess around and have fun while it lasts imo

Unless you are playing with some "religious" dnd neckbeards with weird rules, you can change party members irl with zero problems. This "feature" straight up is killing mp for most people who'd like to try it. Or already screwed their dozens/hundreds of hours runs with active party members stuck there permanently.

That actually is how it should work isnt it? When you play with friends, you just do not kick them out arent you?
Bladeheart Aug 26, 2023 @ 6:43am
What happens then if we have a group of 4 players and one player cannot make a session, do we end up running with a group of three and the missing player's character just stands where ever last logged off?
Bladeheart Aug 26, 2023 @ 6:48am
Thinking about this some more, if there is a single player campaign, can another player join and have autonomous control over a companion?
If so it might be a work around, there is possibly one custom made companion and two origin companions.
Ericius161 Aug 26, 2023 @ 7:04am
That is how it is currently. When a player leaves the game, you can play his character, but you can't exchange this character for another one in the camp.

My thought was, I play my personal playthrough and if a friend feels like it, he plays it temporarily with me. Hop on hop off.

But now I have to drag his character along permanently and play it instead of him, wait until we both want to continue playing at the same time, or start a new game where then really no one else is allowed to play along with me.

This is totally unnecessary. If I wanted to play it like "real life" I could just do that, but as it is now I have no other choice.

And sorry, this game is good, but not so good that I want to sacrifice time for multiple playthroughs.

there is a console mod of sorts, that allows you to input the necessary commands to permanently delete a character, which i used to delete one of my friend's characters... It worked, but it would be much better if Larian implemented that option as a feature.

One of the hotfixes supposedly introduced a host confirmation to let a player join, which defeats the purpose of open and friends lobbies. Though I don't know what the actual message is and wether it makes note about the undeletable nature of joined charactzers.
