Two iron should be set aside if player intends to do the Karlach quests which require the blacksmith to "fix" her.
More iron should be set aside if player wants some awesome heavy armor and/or medium helmets.
Limited supply during the same. The key NPC here is Dammon, once he leaves the Grove and appears in Last Light Inn.

It's when you're in the duergar area with the forge and the forge boss and all that. Adamantine perhaps. Anyway while you're down there you find a few nodes that you can mine directly for ore. You can feed those (along with moulds you find) to the forge and get some cool items.
As for Silver Ingots, those damnedable things that feel like they should be kept forever... far as I know there are no uses for them unless there's an alchemical combine that can use them. I've cleared the game once so far, never used a silver ingot.
I don't know everything about the game, excited to be proven wrong here. Giving the best info I have, hth.
