Aunt Ethel's Accent – absolute cringe and just plain awkward
Well top o' the mornin te ye and dillly effen aye!

But no – seriously – I am REALLY enjoying this game as a whole. But we need to talk about lazy cliché Irish characters with obviously fake and stereotyped Irish accents.

Why in Selûne's good name can they not just get Irish actors to do the voice acting for these roles? Or even better voice actors who speak the Irish language and have a good understanding of our country’s linguistics.

It isn’t even offensive for most Irish people (I imagine) – it’s just immensely awkward and cringy to play through. And then the cliché with the wooden spoon. I’m fairly sure most countries used corporal punishment in the past, but the Irish have been assigned an instrument with which they supposedly had a tendency to impose such corporal punishment. Whoever came up with that cliché did not come from Ireland – and neither did Aunt Ethel’s voice actor.

To summarise:
Complete unadulterated cringe.
(but thanks for the rest of the game)

The voice actress is from the UK and if you listen to her previous works she doesn't sound all that different. Look up Rena Valeh and check for yourself.

Evidence of this: they said "the Irish language" in the original post. Then claim to have a background in linguistics and to be from Ireland.

Sounds more like a dude from Minnesota.

You do know that Ireland actually has its own language, right? Its called Gaelic and apparently people are working hard on preserving it after England tried to wipe it out when it took over and imposed English upon them.

I assume you meant that for op. Because what you're saying was exactly my point: a Irish person with a background in linguistics and such wouldn't say "the Irish language".

But how come it is such a big deal? It's a fantasy game, not a real person or representation of your country Ireland?

No - I'm just some guy from Ireland. My background is in linguistics and translation.
...and nobody ever told you that Ireland is a whole ass... sry, 'ars' country with a diverse set of accents and not a town with a single note?
Well, Im just gonna get back to this brain surgery I was doing between writing papers on solutions to cancer and world hunger.

lol. Your incredibly mild and well-mannered criticism sure upset some people.

If it makes it less 'cringe' - she's technically not from Ireland, or even speaking English, it's a fantasy land where they're speaking 'common'; she just happens to be from a place where they all sound like someone doing a bad Irish accent :P

Your implied solution is that I get so deep into the role and world that I actually forget the languages and countries and accents of this real world.
Something tells me you play D&D tabletop as well :)
Thanks for the suggestion – I will try my very best to get into character the next time I meet a Faux Paddy character in the game. But I am doubtful of success.

lol, I try but it's hard to get a session these days. People always have "responsibilities" or something.
Good luck anyway, and enjoy the rest of the game :)

I'm not Irish but I lived there for a couple of years. All the Irish accents in this game sound cringey to me, a non-native speaker. The only Irish accent I loved was Annah's from Planescape Torment and that was pulled off by a Scottish singer which made it unique :winter2019cooldog:

Yes - I spent the first 26 years of my life there.

Yes, they would. It's officially called the Irish language or Gaeilge. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Irish-language

If you read the wiki article I posted, a lot of modern people just call it Irish now instead of the old name. So yes, it seems legit for someone to call it 'the Irish language' just like it would be legit for me to say 'the English language'.

Let me guess - you're from continental Europe and not monolingual?
That makes you FAR too much of an expert for this conversation - dont you know!
(just joking)
Thanks for backing me up.

What's exactly wrong with stereotypical accents in a fantasy world? It would be cringe if it was RDR2 and an Irish person (and btw, Irish accent is hard to understand as ♥♥♥♥. So no, thank you.) But she's a fey. She can sound however she wants. Heck, for all we know it can be just an act and not her "real" accent
