Speak with animals not working for me?
I have the effect on my character. I can see the effect symbol in the bottom left of the HUD, saying I can speak with animals until my next long rest.

Well, when I click 'talk' on an animal, the narrator lady just says a few general things about the animal... No actual discussion with the animals are had. Is this a bug? What am I missing? :crashqmark::crashqmark::crashqmark:

Edit: Okay, so after chatting up a several rats, I finally got one to speak rather than hearing the narrator. It said "Just a little bite! I dont think he'd mind!" I just would like them all to say things like that. Not sure why it is just 1/7 animals actually speak? The spell is "speak with animals" after all... Not "Hear more of the narrator when trying to speak to half the animals" spell lol.

Some animals only say their line once, and if you didnt have speak with animals the first time, you will miss out.

Most animals and corpses have very little to say, especially more than once.

I am not even getting a single line out of the animal. The narrator lady will just say, "This chicken likes to cluck" or "This rat yearns to be in a crevice".. Is there not supposed to be any discussion whatsoever with basic animals the way it happened with the dog?

Thats the thing... I am not getting a single line out of them. Just the narrator talking about the animals desires or whatever.

Maybe its for the small animals. Try talking to the bigger ones.

I think it depends on the animal and maybe on its relevance to the plot. There are some rats in the game that have something to say (won't reveal where or which ones because spoilers), but most of the chickens and rats you run across are probably just doing basic chicken and rat things, like enjoying clucking or being in crevasses.

That's such a let down. Its "Talk to animals"... Not, "Talk to big animals only because somehow small animals cant magically speak tho" like what?

That sure is super duper fun. "Talk to animal" except not those ones, only these ones

Bummed for you. The few times I've used animal-talk potions, I've had dialog. Rats in Shar's temple are kinda funny (and really uppity, wow) plus the opening dialogs with Scratch and Owlbear Cub were pretty endearing. I don't do it often because I refuse to spend spell-slots out of combat.

Perhaps you're accidentally focusing a character who didn't drink the potion before clicking the animal? IDK.

You can talk to a lot of animals, small and big ones.

Sometimes it is just banter for flavor, sometimes you get a little secret out of them, sometimes you get a whole new way to solve a situation you are facing.

And sometimes they don't have anything to say.

The spell is active until long rest, so just talk to all the animals you encounter, you never know when you get something good.

It's the long game.

Its not the Size.
Its wether the Animal is smart enough to and interested enough to talk.

Animals not smart enough to talk or simply not bothering with you instead get the narrator talking about their toughts.

Dont worry. There is lots of small animals you can talk to.

you don't get to have long conversations with every npc either.

Do you think they actually wrote dialogue for every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ animal in the game?

Talk about self-entitled whining.

Yeah, a random pool of one liners that is randomly said by critters isn't a huge ask. You're angry. We get it.

I have gotten at least a line out of every NPC I have interacted with and the narrator has never spoke for them... Not sure what you mean?
