Story behind the "Lovers Rings"

there are two rings in Moonrise Town: True Love's Emrbance & True Love's Caress.

But I don't understand the story behind ... I really want to understand: WHY does the man becomes ill? What happend?

I read through the associated readings somewhat quickly weeks ago, but given where you find the rings I thought that one wearer was taking damage from battle and in the house of healing while the other was taking an equal amount of damage (given the nature of the rings), wondering if the other was going to come home. They both died.

Tragic love story about a guy who married a priestess of Shar. Husbands ring can only give the bond, hers can only receive it - embrace and caress. She came home without a scratch, but every wound she got was inflicted on him, resulting in his death, maybe before he could even stand up to leave the house of healing again. The wife is found unburied in her full armor still, only the ring, her diary, and a dagger on her. it's heavily implied if not outright stated that the wife was a cleric of Shar who basically tricked the husband into being a shield for her through the rings.

Not merely that, but her diary mentions being married for a long time "in the fifth year of our union" and describing events that precede the fighting. Add that to the fact that her husband was married to her, by her, during the fighting, and seeing as she carried that diary to her death, I take it to mean that she exploited knowing that man had feelings for her, and married him in order to give herself a health battery... Perhaps not her first one.

It's clear from reading their diaries and seeing how the rings work that the guy had no idea what was happening, but the Sharran healers knew what was up.

actually makes real good sense since being a devotee to Shar strips you of love, joy and everything else just like with Shadowheart. She didnt love him anymore or never did and used him as a shield
