Any chest armor that is not a robe/cloth is considered armor
Any other piece of gear (helmet, boots, bracers) that is not light is considered armor.
Thus, if you have no armor, but have a Helmet that says (medium armor), you are considered armored.
At least, Wyll is my game functions like this.
Whilst the unarmoured defense trait can be handy early on, unless you have extremely high Dex and Con you'd likely be better off wearing medium armour.

I looked at it and it gave a buff that I liked but I didn't see it classify as armour when I put it on before
Robe count as armor.
You can wear anything and be unarmored, provided it isn't tagged with "light armor" or "medium armor" or "heavy armor" in its information popup/window.
