Why is there so much dice rolling?
I am enjoying taking my time so far but I noticed there is a lot of dice rolling in this game . I know it’s D&D and I loved BG 1& 2 but did Larian expect us to treat this game like true hardcore D&Ders? …and not save scum /constant reloads for the right outcomes? (Which is what I do because I don’t care)

I own DOS2 but never got around to playing it , that similar with the randomness?

Just curious because I am constantly quick saving at every cutscene because I don’t trust this game just bringing up the roll menu out of nowhere

Well, after watching a few episodes of Critical Role, all I can say is.

"Roll a perception check, roll a perception check, roll a perception check."

The rolls waste your time and inflate playthrough lengths.

That´s why BG1 or BG2 were better. Mixing real time and pause was great, because now you need 10 minutes just to kill a couple of Goblins in pause mode, and you could kill them in a minute with no pause mode.

The idea is to go where fate takes you, but in reality I desire a certain outcome and will save scum to get it, maybe play to chance on another run.

2x speed would be appreciated.
Because WotC controls the license and wanted BG3 to have a more direct through-line to tabletop.

The point of rolling in actual DnD and in Baldurs Gate is to introduce an element that's out of your control. That way, the story can take unpredictable turns. If you fail a roll, just keep going. The game won't end.

If you want complete control over all of the story outcomes, then play a Telltale game with a walkthough.

??? Who actually thinks real time with pause was a good combat system? It's so horrid that even PoE added in an entire turn based mode, since people hated real time with pause.

This game is D&D, plain and simple. And people love it for a reason.

Something that's always struck me about games based on D&D is the #1 thing they all prioritise is exact mechanical simulation of the tabletop game, yet I've never met a single person who plays D&D for its gameplay mechanics. The dice rolls in D&D exist because they are straightforward and feasible to implement in a tabletop setting, but the collaborative roleplaying experience is the true appeal.

As such, I feel like it's clear if you're making a game based on D&D, what you would strive to implement is the open-ended nature of the storytelling and you can take a ton of liberties with the gameplay mechanics. In many ways, I would say that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a perfect D&D game. It retains the "flavor" of D&D, but the mechanics have been adjusted to better suit a computer RPG. Going back to a much more straightforward implementation of D&D's rules definitely feels like a downgrade in some areas.

And there you go. You answered your own question.

I agree, especially annoying is that bonuses are slowly added even after you exceeded with just die roll.

Please speed this up.

Yes because we don't have enough threads of braindead players sticking their fingers in their nose and running their entire party into traps and then screaming about "bad AI" and "bad game design" because they're too lazy to take their time and maneuver their party carefully through a dangerous area of the map.

Yea.... yea increasing speed would definitely help.

With that said, as far as OP is concerned, the dice rolling helps to allow conversations and things to happen dynamically. It depends on the situation really, but if I can I continue to roll with the punches even when dice rolls fail that's what I do.

There's also Inspiration which, if you're playing correctly you should start getting alot of allowing you to re-roll several times in situations where you would normally want to reload your save.

It'll make it fun to play the game through a second time and seeing the dice rolls take you in different directions. I think people are a little too attached to "everything must go my way or I reload my save". Have some self control at times. Or don't I guess, it's really whatever is more fun for you.

But you don't have a DM that can improvise from failed rolls, you just fail. This talking point of "you get interesting stuff when you fail" is completely bull-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-shi, you don't, you just fail and have to fight stuff you could have avoided.
