1. It would allow me to get a 1 up on Rapheal and gain an ally in the future.
2. I might be able to call in a favor from Yurgir in the future.
I'm asking is there any actual way to free him from the contract, or are we basically forced to either keep him trapped in it by helping or kill him?
2) To convince him into killing himself, you must first of all pass a hidden check to spot the flaws in his contract. Failing that, you will not see such options during the conversation.
3) He can make him your ally later, no matter what action you take in Act 2 right now. Making him die once here just makes it harder to get him as an ally later - for obvious reasons!
4) If the rats are dead when you approach him peacefully and talk to him, he will always leave, no matter what you say. In this case, the only way to kill him for his weapon is NOT to talk (again), just attack. I learned this also the hardest way - in Tactacian mode - I reloaded several times and could not find a single dialog path to making him kill him. After the final reload was, of course, no talk, just attack, that was it.
5) OP - you are fine. He can be your ally one way or the other later.
