Astarian at the very end (spoilers)

The ending i got has him being burnt by the sun and he runs off with his skin flaking off into light. is there any other ending? what happens to him? does he survive?

i am absolutely devastated. I didn't even get to say goodbye

Spoilers, obviously, but ascended vampire doesn't care about sun. In my ending he was alive and well.

In my playthrough SPOILER
I had the first cutscene and then later in camp a cutscene where he asks me where we will go from there. My Character told him he will join him in the underdark managing the realeased 7k spawn and live happy ever after. <3
He swore his true love for me earlier in game and I stayed with him for the whole game

Do you have to romance him to get him to survive or can you convince him that that's what he should do?

He always survives(assuming he's alive before the end), he just runs off in the ending scene if he's not ascended, he doesn't get burned to a crisp while standing there. But you only get the extra scene that gives any semblance of closure if he's your partner.

Yeah that was my assumption, too.
You do have different options in that scene, too.
If you want to be stone cold, you can leave him there with him being unable to walk the sun or tell him you will find a way to allow him to walk in the sun, ask him to run away with you and the underdark spawn option. Maybe even more, these where the ones I got though.

Ah gotcha. In my game I didn't build high approval with him so he left my party after I denied him his chance to become an ascended vampire. I suppose he survived; I just don't know in what capacity.

In my runs he dies either without speaking a word, or staked. First time I went through and got pissed off Cazador's quest is full of bugs.

yeah the ascend is tricky, if you wait too long before trying to convince him not to go through with it, the hunger for power will overcome him and you have no chance of talking him out of it. Iirc you can even get him to straight attack you in that scene.

he is my partner though. there was an extra scene? did i just not get it??? all i got was him running off and then it ended.

where do you get this option? it doesnt come up for me. i am the highest level friendship with him and i thought we were partners?

Well It was at the very end right before the credits for me. And I had multiple times where we bonded before. *shrug* so I guess you might be missing something?
