The monster info popup when you examine them states they are beholders. On the main screen they are called Spectators. Maybe Larian originally put in fully fledged beholders but the EA players got so traumatised by them Larian decided to have mercy and downgraded them. Slightly.
Yesterday I got ambushed by the one near the Arcane Tower. I'm still traumatised today
Spectators can be taken out by a level 1-3 party dependent on the mob in DnD. Beholders are meant for levels 8+.
Beholders are glass cannons, but they're glass cannons that either wipe your party or die in a few rounds.
They're on par w/ mind flayers.

In the Elfsong Tavern
Aren't spectators and beholders the same creature?
Spectators are like Babies first Beholder..
