Funny enough, all of those encounters I did with my party and had no trouble whatsoever or hadn't considered using the horn.
in the final battle, i used the horn

Used them again on the goblins. I coulda used them on the gnolls I guess, or the "paladins". I like them. Shame they wont stick around after Act 1
So that's what it is? I didn't even get the option, I just ordered the Gnoll lady to leave me alone, and she went inside the cave and killed them. I didn't tell her to do that.
For the hag fight you don't want to use them because they will kill mayrina.
They weren't kidding when they said "ogres kill everyone around".
If there are any "friendly" npcs around when you summon them, they will attack them too, not just your enemies.
You also don't need them for the gnoll cave fight because you can just convince the boss gnoll to kill all the other ones.
I always choose the goblin camp because they make good distractions for all the goblins and they kill most of them with one hit.
Just gotta be careful to make sure that volo is already out of the area or they will attack him too.
I had one fight where volo had already gone invisible right next to an ogre, then for some reason VOLO ATTACKED THE OGRE BARE HANDED and got pulled out of invisibility.
Then the ogre smashed him in one hit.
Anyway, yeah, so long as volo is gone, and you have good persuasion or deception, I use the ogres to clear a bunch of the places inside the goblin camp because there are nothing but enemies there.
If they survive all the goblins outside, then I take them inside to clear out the big main room and also help on the boss fights if they are still alive after that.
