Knocked them out = "everyone's dead" apparently?
In the "get help from Auntie Ethel" quest, when I show up at her house and talk to Mayrina, it gives me the dialogue option:

"I fought your brothers, but I didn't kill them - I only knocked them out" so I chose that response. Then she immediately starts crying "dead, everyone's dead!"

I can understand why the game might internally consider a 'knock out' as a dead NPC - but why on earth is there the option to TELL HER I knocked them out, if giving that answer still makes her think that I killed them?

Makes no sense at all. Why is that dialogue even an option if it has zero effect?

non-lethal damage is dumb, as in it doesn't really work outside of a few VERY scripted instances where it does work.
You don't want to kill the drow lady but still want to save the tieflings? too bad!
You don't want to kill the gnomes threatened to fight by baneites? too bad!
You don't want to kill the grieving widow for wanting to keep her husband as an undead abomination? too bad!

I swear to god Non-lethal damage in this game shouldn't be an option turn on at all.
Why have the option for something that isn't going to work as intended?
Because they cut it from the game. Earlier idea was take to prisoners and interrogation. Wyll even had entirely different stuff related to it. There were more meaningful outcomes from some NPCs. Like Hag survivors.
They just cut it from the game and forgot to remove entire string of codes which triggered journal entries.

It's pointless. Her brothers die. They are scripted to die. You can't save them.

Mayrinna is the most tragic character in the entire game. Her husband died and then her brothers died.

Some of them don't die but others do and they list them when you knock empty out, this is either "unconscious" or "unconscious (temporary)" one means when they "wake up" they disappear forever. Although saved or not doesn't really change that quest.

Well sure. But if they're scripted to die - why is that dialogue there? Someone coded it in specifically for that scenario (but then it has zero effect).

If they're scripted to die, then that line should not exist at all. (Or at least it would make more sense for her to say something like 'oh no, not my dear brothers...' instead of ignoring what you just said to her, and calling them dead...)

Yeah that's a touchy one I knocked out some mind controlled knights/soldiers then removed there mask. Then realized by doing that i just killed them all.

Rushing a game to release one month ahead of another super hyped game, usually has consequences.

Hardly a unique story of woe around those parts.

Yes I just did that with Ethel's masks lol. 'Nice, I just knocked him out!' -remove mask- 'oop okay well now you're dead I guess.'

It is broken and cut mechanic, you can literally see journal entries and NPC placeholder conversations but for some reason they pulled the plug on full feature and rendered it as paladin oath save

Ironically if you tell them its none of your business and that you wont help them, they dont die. At least, potentially not until act 3. Havent gotten that far yet. But Ethel, when pressed, says she sent them to Sutton Farm by Baldurs Gate.

they dont die if you remove masks after Ethel is dead but all knocked out chars go to graveyard regardless

I suppose, when you knock out people in a toxic swamp full of blood thirsty red-caps, and a super-frog, it is just common sense to expect that nothing bad at all will happen to them, and this silly girl has no common sense and just assumes they got poisoned, drowned, and eaten.

I suppose there are probably a great many instances of ends not matching up like this, oh well.

Just seemed highly annoying since I suspected my knocking out the brothers wouldn't truly matter in the end, so then I was very happy to see the dialogue option to tell her I'd not killed them! But alas, just kidding, I guess >_>

nope, not the case, knock out someone in safe zone with many of his friends around, they will go to graveyard too. Mayrina journal entry literally says "We knocked out Mayrina" "We killed Mayrina" after you knock her out and when she is infront of you , alive, with 1 hp.

It is just cut mechanic, originally it was planned for better stuff if i remember right from EA chat.

That's really unfortunate that there's a 'knock-out' mechanic to bypass killing - but in the end it really does nothing.
