War Priest or Paladin?
Hello everyone. Am planning for a holy warrior themed run on my next playthrough and choosing between War Domain Cleric or Paladin. Which do you guys prefer in your opinion between the two? Is the Oath mechanic of paladin restricts playstyle too much? War Domain cleric still very weak to play as a melee holy warrior?

Paladins don't tied to any god directly(only in your mind). Cleric involved with gods directly. Paladins serving only their personal oaths whaveter it their beleving in some gods dogmas or just their personal sense of justice.
If you wan't direct answer - war cleric IS holy warrior.
Paladin - arguable.
If you can't pick just take 2 or 5levels of paladin and all rest is cleric.

To piggy back off this, before someone blames Larian, Paladin Oath's replaced Deities in 5E DnD.

And MAN do I love this, being "god warriors" never really suitted them anyway.
Paladins rather being powered by their own CONVICTION is much more appealing and interesting, and going AGAINST their PRINCIPLES ties very neatly into losing their powers.

Really replacing the deity aspect of Paladins went a long way to making them feel rounded out and unique as a class. When they relied on their chosen deity they felt more like Melee Focused Cleric than anything imo.

And that's what War Clerics are for anyway,e even if they are not as melee specifically.
Paladin was really just an integrated Fighter/Cleric multiclass with restrictions or, in a way, a precursor to Eldritch Knight.

From a power gaming perspective it comes down to the fact that good players do not require as much healing so a war priest is fine to cover what's needed plus bring significantly more offensive capability to the party. This makes room in your party for an additional damage dealer.

If you are not such an expert player (or you are playing on low difficulty) then you are going to need a good healer cleric.

However on their own merits the Paladin trounces the Cleric into the dust as far as offensive capability goes. Paladin is widely considered the strongest single target burst damage dealer in the game and damnably tanky into the bargain.

So the main reason why you might want to play War Cleric as your holy warrior archetype is so you can play, for example, both Lai'zel and Karlach for some uber melee beef up front or both Wyll and Gale for some uber magic mayhem.

Otherwise Paladin is stronger than War Cleric.

Champion worst possible type of fighter. +5% chance of crit is looking good but in reality - total crap. Still don't mind me play whatever you want.

I was conflicted between Paladin and War Cleric. I went Paladin because it's pretty much just better, and also, I can be the party Face and max Charisma. I bring shadowheart as war cleric. She follows the paladin around and inflicts war as a way of honoring her deity. Like other people said, don't play champion fighter lol. It's bad. I get it, I want to play it too. Lots of people want to play it. But, seriously, you're in for a bad time. Or, like, turn the difficulty down.

Light Cleric has a pretty cool AOE skill, and remember you can always try to multiclass somehow.

I'd say tempest is best cleric along with light. Paladin 5/warlock 5 is just OP broken right now. 3 attacks at level 10 without haste. Although Sorc is much better due to twinned haste since paladin can twin himself. Which is crazy powerful. You can get 3 haste casts per long rest. 1 from item and 2 more using Sorc points (you need to get 1 more Sorc point from level 1 spell slot. But honestly having ability to twin haste is just too good. Wyll went from being a chump to actually good. Since you can haste your entire party turn 1 it's a no brainer
