War Priest or Paladin?

Hello everyone. Am planning for a holy warrior themed run on my next playthrough and choosing between War Domain Cleric or Paladin. Which do you guys prefer in your opinion between the two? Is the Oath mechanic of paladin restricts playstyle too much? War Domain cleric still very weak to play as a melee holy warrior?

As a War Cleric in a currently going campaign I would rather disagree, I fishing slap and tank like the strongest crusader around, our Conquest Paladin had nothing on me.
In general, Cleric is the strongest class in 5e, absolutely OP.

ok thanks. I thought War Cleric can still be a decent melee class even though I know paladin is surely the superior melee class of the two. But I did read in some other forums that war cleric is still mostly spell oriented so wanted to ask here in steam since the bg3 community here is as active as their official forums.

I agree, Spirit Guardians is probably my favorite AoE ability. Case in point:

War Cleric is your Off-brand holy warrior that you'd rather be a healbot. Not great at the job but better than nothing.
Paladin is defacto holy warrior, and you have Oath of Ancients/Devotion/Vengeance or Oathbreaker (you can reclaim oaths after breaking them)

Oath of Ancients is more aligned to pallies focusing on ranged attacks.
Devotion is closer to classic Paladin.
Vengeance is nuts, as it lets you cast Haste which gives you two actions, effectively lending you four attacks per turn.

Using a halberd artifact, previously a spear but it reforged after killing a black dragon from the inside.
It does shoot projectiles, but I prefer to tank for my squishy pals together with our Goliath Rune Warrior, so yeah, Halberd and Shield.

Thanks everyone. I decided to go war cleric on my next playthrough since I want to be able to use different composition of teams unlike now where I basically have shadowheart permanently with me haha. At least as a cleric if I do not bring shadowheart I can still off heal a bit. Plus am interested what extra story I can unlock as a cleric of selune since the story seems to involve selune a lot.

I would role the priest squishy but can well I don't know the rules well War Priest sounds epic
