A lot of great abilities from the shapeshift use bonus actions. example web and the leap from owl bear. they both use bonus action and a moon druid uses up their bonus action to wildshape. Land druid would be better here since they shape using action and then can use their bonus action for these strong abilities. but druid is still a full caster. they are great imo. the ONLY negative for me is that a lot of the stat stick equipment doesnt transfer over to when you are shifted.
The level 6 ability Primal Strike to ignore nonmagical resistance for Moon Druids is also currently not working, and I think Moon Druids exclusively also get Extra Attack for their forms; two attacks at level 5 and three attacks at level 10.
All in all, a solid melee brawler that can fall back into a full caster role with a spell list packed with AoE control, utility and a bit of healing if the situation calls for it, even on Tactician. And you can wear medium armor, use a shield, and swing in melee for a D8 using your Wisdom modifier to boot, and there's no shortage of nice quarterstaves to pick from.
Wild shapes ranged from OK to strong in my opinion. Played on Balanced difficulty.
A Fighter will dish out more damage for sure - but the shapeshifting gave my Druid a crazy HP pool to soak damage. AC was fine, but not great. Didn’t bother me since the HP was a bonus.
Very, very rarely did my Druid’s wild shape form get one shot, and if it did, it made me happy she soaked the damage. Just wild shaped again on the next turn.
She was also a decent spellcaster when the situation called for it, and a decent healer.
All-in-all, I enjoyed the Wild Shape mechanic from level 1 through 12, and you get new, stronger forms, so you are never weak. Definitely pulled her weight.
TLDR; Moon Druid was perfectly viable in my opinion, and in fact very flexible.
One of them, the saber tooth, even has persistent regeneration. Unlike the regen items, it works out of combat too.
And Bear is only available to Moon druids anyway.
I suppose class viability doesn't really matter cuz I am not gonna be playing Tactician, so I'll just stick to Moon Druid for now. Maybe I'll respecc into Spore Druid for summoning type of character, seems fun too.
even got a main enemy maulted by my lvl 12 shapeshifter char, it can be very strong, but ofc fighter is superior
