Chamber of Insight - Are my books bugged? (Minor spoilers)

So I tried for a long while to figure out how to make these books stop flying but nothing I did worked. So I googled it and every article I find says to go turn based and then throw the books and they will stay on the ground for you to read. I've tried this several times now, but as soon as they hit the ground they vanish in a puff of smoke.
I already know the answer to the puzzle since the stupidity of the people writing the articles led with "You can just kill X" instead of how you get to that conclusion, but I want to do it the proper way.

Is the throw really the intended solution and my books are broken or am I missing something...

Never mind, throwing seems to work if you throw them some distance away and not just like a meter from your characters, guess they need a certain amount of free space where they land.
