[Bug?] Multiclass Wizard > Warrior : No heavy armor
Hello,

I'm trying to understand how multiclassing works.
I tried something simple : multiclassing a wizard and a warrior.
The multiclass order seems to give different results, please help me understand why.

If I start as a wizard, then multiclass to warrior, I can't use heavy armors (only light and medium).
If I start as a warrior, then multiclass to wizard, I can use heavy armors.

Why does the order change the result?
Is this a bug?

What troubles me even more is that multiclassing a wizard into a clerc lets me wear heavy order.
Why is the result different then?

If not, please explain to me how the multiclassing order works.
Because I suppose heavy armors aren't the only ability deleted when multiclassing in the wrong order.

Thanks for your help and your time :)

It is not a bug, it is how multiclassing[bg3.wiki] works.

Dont think Wisards and most other casters, choose to wear cloth armor. Its more that metallic armor interferes with magic. It just dont say it in game, in most cases.

Thanks for your answers.
I'd really like to know why it works that way.

If I multiclass a wizard into a cleric, he can wear heavy armors.
Why the difference?

In order to gain armor/skill proficiency you need to start as that class.

Only your initial class gets *every* proficiency.

HOWEVER you can multiclass into a cleric subclass that gets heavy armor prof, and get the proficiency, since it's a SUBCLASS FEATURE, not an initial class proficiency.

there are some elements you only get if you take class X as your first class.
heavy armor prof. on warrior is an example.
Luckily you can later respec and take the warrior first and then the wizard if you want to change that

Because the heavy armor proficient cleric subclasses aren't initial cleric proficiencies, but rather subclass features, which you get in full.

I posted a link which explains it for you, why it is the way it is I have no idea as you'd have to ask the people who decided that for 5e dnd.

This is not a bug but also true of tabletop D&D and honestly I'm not entirely sure why. Paladin and Fighter both give heavy armour proficiency only when you start as that class.
Another example (which I haven't confirmed for BG3) is that Rogues get 2 extra skill proficiencies (4 total) when you pick them at level 1, but only give 1 extra when you multiclass into them.

Now it should still be possible to get heavy armour proficiency through multiclassing if you pick either a Cleric domain that grants it, or the Ranger Favoured Enemy option that gives it (I recommend Cleric). This is because these aren't "base proficiencies" like heavy armour is for Fighter and Paladin, but rather direct class features. That said, I haven't confirmed these work in BG3.

You would need to read the multiclass rules (can certainly be found on the web), since they are a bit convoluted and not like in former editions.

If you want heavy armour proficiency really badly then multiclassing into Ranger and selecting "Ranger Knight" should give you heavy armour proficiency or going Cleric and selecting the War domain should also get you heavy armour proficiency.

Lategame, there is also a piece of heavy armor that requires no proficiency to wear. Though, the one sold by dammon is a lot better.

Class feature vs. subclass feature.

Fighter starts with heavy armor, so start with a fighter.
