Attack Rolls vs Damage Rolls
Which ones gives a critical hit on a nat 20?

I think I understand how this works but if someone wants to break it down for a non DnD player, that'd be appreciated.

EDIT: What is a critical defined as? Like, is it double damage? Extra damage by 50%? How's that decided?

Attack rolls are your "hit or miss" rolls. A nat 20 on that results in a critical hit.
A critical hit will should then have you roll double the number of damage dice (I haven't checked if this is how BG3 handles it).

Attack rolls, because they use a twenty-sided die.
Damage rolls don't, and can't, because they used dice with few sides.

Attack rolls are a critical on a nat 20. Basically if the d20 you roll in order to hit lands on 20 it automatically hits and does extra damage.

Attack Rolls decide if you are going to do damage or not and if you are doing damage, what kind of damage you will do. Nat 20 is crit based on your attack roll. Damage is rolled after you pass attack check.

In 5E rules it double your damage dice (not your modifiers).

For example, if you score a critical hit with a dagger, roll 2d4 for the damage, rather than 1d4, and then add your relevant ability modifier. If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue’s Sneak Attack feature, you roll those dice twice as well.

Essentially, whatever the number of dice you normally roll for damage is, it gets doubled.
