Playing a Tiefling as as a black non binary person is brutal. Your party members antagonize you, the game antagonizes you, and the plot positions you as the bad guy if you don’t help the druids calling you slurs. 🥲🫠 Like if I don't help the Druid who was going to execute a child of my race for being of my race I lose access to Karlach. I save the druids and they insinuate l'm a disease. If I fail the Druid quest, a massacre of my people is on my hands. What the ♥♥♥♥? I come home from a long day of microaggressions and masking and then my guard is immediately back up. I should be stressed that I'm making bad decisions, not be Lae'zel keeps threatening to kill me in my sleep for having horns. And for white priviliged players this is just fantasy. 🥲

More games should have the race you choose to play as reflected in how people treat you. Being a tiefling doesn't mean anything other than you're a tiefling and most people look at them and see devils. Doesn't help that they are genuinely descended from devils or demons.

It's great that the game treats you like that, and they treat you even worse if you're a drow.

It's one of the reasons the Drizzt Do'Urden novels became so popular. A character from an evil race and culture that proves they are not that, overcoming all the discrimination and issues from people who don't know better and becoming a hero.

You can't have that particular heroes journey, however, if you don't have people judging you based on what you look like, and that is always going to be a thing. First impressions are the most important ones after all.

How different is it.
I consider playing one.

Well, I'll give an early game example to avoid spoilers.

If you approach the two tieflings who have Lae'zel in a cage near the ruins at the start of the game as a drow then the ONLY dialogue option you have to end things peacefully is to make an intimidation roll because they'll attack you on sight if you don't, they automatically assume the worst.

Zevlor in the druid grove will very specifically mention how brave you are that are aren't disguising yourself the first time you talk to him and that he'll tell everyone else in the grove that we're a trustworthy drow, or at least don't try and kill us on sight.

Basically, being a drow and wanting to be a good character puts the game on hard mode for you because everyone automatically assumes the worst about you. Which makes perfect sense considering the drow's reputation.
