Balthazar fight is an abomination.
Game is great. Truly awesome so far.

But this fight is complete bs. way to many minions he just summons out of his ass. he does way to much damage. (lvl 8 party). Larian does great but they do a truly terrible job of tuning their games sometimes. Divinity was the same way. Why they don't give you the chance for overlevelling (I went through the underforge and went back through the mountain pass) to do anything is beyond me. They're should be half as many minios in this fight and he should do half the damage he does. Terrible fight.

You can pickpocket his potion of haste while another party member is talking to him. This means he doesn't get to cast two spells in one round during the fight. Then position your people on the safer high ground ready to unleash hell. Then finish the conversation and get that party member to safer ground as quick as you can.

Protection from Poison is good to have, as Balthazar likes to use Ray of Sickness and Cloudkill.

Ooo... the pickpocketing would helped a lot. Him zipping around and double tapping people with the Ray of Sickness was brutal.

Since I'm playing a druid I made it a habit to just cast protection from poison on the party. Usually to protect us from my own cloudkill spells. lol.

I think it depends whether you persuaded him to lend you Flesh:P If you got the bell to summon the golem, Balthazar cannot really count on him right?

Yup.

He gave me the bell and Flesh never showed up.

Dude, silence, counterspell, Edrich Blast, grease... So many ways to win. Personally, I took my own warlock and Wyl and using haste and Eldrich blast I had 4 charges each per turn. He could not raise them fast enough. I also use grease and hex dexterity to make him tumble and then flaming arrows to light him on fire... So many ways to win... Especially in tactician you need to use... Tactics to win.

No they aren't. He can WALK out of the silence sphere, and has advantage (which means you have to savescum) to turn undead...

Where are you all getting this "SILENCE AND TURN UNDEAD, EASY" crap from?
I cast silence and he just walks out of it, casts his 50 spells, and spawns more aggros. And unless you're save scumming or outrageously lucky, good luck with Turn Undead, he has baked in advantage against it.

you can turn him into a sheep and throw him off the ledge. You can one shot him before he spawns anything with a properly specd rogue , ranger or paladin. You can stun him for two turns with the gith sword from the creche.

You also will be overleveled if you clear the entire Creche and do both the underdark and the mountain pass paths to the tower.

Alot of options here.

I dunno. I think it was a tough but fun fight. I had everyone focus on B until he was unalived (in a couple of turns). The rest of the mobs were straightforward to deal with. Pushed several off of the cliffs.

Shadowheart is the key here. By the time you get to this point in the game, Shadoheart should have 2 uses of turn undead. A massive boon here. Alternatively, if you're using Gale, and he is an evoker focus, his fireball or ice storm will pretty much make the fight one sided. Paladin and Cleric of Light are also insanely strong here. Especially the cleric of light. His channel divinity is a MASSIVE AOE that does good damage to everything, and insane damage to undead/fiends/evil beings. If you got The Blood of Lathander that helps a great deal too, as Sunbeam is insanely strong in general. Not to mention the weapon blinds all undead that are within 6 meters of the wielder.

The fact that you don't have a way to deal with undead at this point in the game after them literally being thrown at you since the beginning of act 1 is kind of mental.

True how did he clear the 2 necro knights in Mountain Pass, the Yurgir fight and still complain about Balthazar is beyond me... Those Necro Knights are too tanky for a level 5 party and Merregons = 3 Skeletons. Act 2 is full of undead did op not notice that?

He's ez, especially in comparison to the Raphael fight.
Lucci Aug 23, 2023 @ 10:01pm
if you follow the skeletons when you first enter the gauntlet you can find and kill him before you find nightsong and avoid tht whole fight
