I know Wizards can memorize the spell, but it's been two long rests and this little dude is still hanging out with my Paladin.

Thankfully in this run I'm still early in act 2 so I can pick him up.

Respec into a wizard and then talk to them, you can get a special ability to summon them, no spell slot required.

Can permanently summon Shovel if you play Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard, or as a Dragonborn if you select the right dialogue.
I always put 1 point into the require spell caster and respec afterwards and you still get to keep them.
