I enjoy Gale, he fits my team well cause he is my aoe burst damager. I pair him with OoTaPaladinTav, Shadowheart and Astarion.
He's a little bit better than Nere, but it's damn close. I just leave him in the rock these days.
You can tune up one of the other characters to be a wizard if you need one, or you can roll with a hireling if you're not a wizard yourself.
If anything, I think it's a little refreshing to have a scenario where you actually have to sacrifice *anything* to keep a companion happy and healthy. Wish it were more common in game.
Like, there's basically no logical reason (at least not early on that we see) for Lae'Zel to stay with us as we meander around a Druid circle, a forest, a swamp, a toll house, and random spider-infested caves instead of her just going right to her destination. If we were given some sort of ultimatum to hurry there besides "the story says so", it would be a more interesting dynamic.
On my second playthrough he is the only character from my first party that I recruited again.
but now ill keep him. :3
