A successful pickpocket is just that. You reached into their pocket and took out an item (how their pockets can contain swords or armor IDK) and weren't caught reaching into their pocket.
What happens is after a set amount of time - it's around a minute I think - the NPC notices the missing item and will start asking around or alert the guards.
To resolve this you can enter dialogue with the NPC you want to steal from, steal as much as you can, and then run away. The NPC will either ask the innocent party members or summon guards to ask the innocent party members.
With your thief hiding in a corner somewhere you won't be caught and get away scott free.
Follow your own advice.
Actually, Wither has a very negative approval of you if you steal from him but he bottles it down and doesn't let it effect your character in game.
I will follow my advice. What question did I ask about pickpocket that I need to reply with something constructive to get my point across?
Or am I just replying to trolls for my own enjoyment the same way trolls want to act like they know me for their own enjoyment and satisfaction.
This is incorrect. Other NPCs do confront you for stealing from someone else. They are known as guards. Even other merchants will confront you like in Moonrise.
This doesn't make sense. At all. Why would you reply to your own question?
In most cases (I'm still on 1st playthrough and not delve too deep to invest in a full stealth/assassin/pickpocket role yet) only using MP bard stuck in my party with +10 stealth and +11 Sleigh of Hands - you will get spotted after pickpocket despite successful BECAUSE the obscure factor, the little white sun you see next to your cursor when you stealth.
Most of the situation its full sun - meaning you're fully visible and UN-OBSCURED, so when the vision cone of npcs swoop in your direction you're immediately spotted (unless high stealth then dex save roll may succeed), and because IT IS FULL SUN also means you're completely exposed so when u pickpocket successfully and start running away far the npc will react and either chase you, find guard chase you or run away hide then come back depends.
Half sun means HALF or SLIGHTLY OBSCURED, simply means npcs harder to expose you when vision cone swoop your direction and less likely get call out after pickpocket.
No sun (black inside the sun), means FULLY OBSCURED, meaning vision cone scan you won't expose you, nobody can see you but this instance is practically impossible in ACT 1 and ACT 3 where there's mostly daylight - the weather and lighting in environment goes into play on this obscure factor as well.
So if you plan to pickpocket a trader next time, see if you can turn off as many lights as possible around target (also not get spotted doing so, thus won't raise suspicion and drop attitude)
I also found out in ACT 3 not tested previously after pickpocket and npc react to pickpocket, whoever you used to steal teleport him/her/it to camp and stay a minute then leave camp, that will wipe suspicion on that character. It'll also helps position your other characters by break up party and pos them randomly near trader so npc will react to them first instead of the one you use to pickpocket - which is helpful because those not involved in doing the stealing can simply responded with "I don't know what you're talking about"

if you read earlier posts it was too my understanding based on my experience that no other NPC will confront you for stealing from a merchant. It has never happened to me and that's with my experience of stealing from every merchant possible. If I am wrong, than I cleared all odds of it happening to me. I must be lucky.
I am only quoting this from your post because I don't understand you, and refuse to try. Take care.
Because you replied politely I will respond. I have never had an npc confront me because I stole from a different merchat; this thread is also the first I am hearing of it. I guess it's something that has not happened to me in my 70h of game play. Maybe it will. Though it seems I was wrong about something that I have yet to experience in the game.
thanks for your reply confirming op's topic.
Ok.
