Lae'zel is basically Aeryn Sun. Good, but fairly predictable.
Wyll really explores the potential of the Warlock class for storytelling and the cost of power.
I strongly encourage retrying Shart. Her story is amazing. Yes she starts very secretive, but our favorite Goth Girlfriend has her reasons. Basically, she was indoctrinated into a cult at a young age. You have two paths with her story, her story is HUGE in act 2.
Lae'zal is basically DnD's version of a Hitler Youth. Probably your "youngest" companions (think 18-20s). She worships the very land Glorious Leader walks, and all she knows is from heavy propoganda. The Mindflayer parasites gave her a once-in-a-life time exchange student experience where she can experience culture outside her own for the first time. Will it shatter her indoctrination? Will she stick to her own culture's convictions?
Gale is basically your stereotypical archmage gary-stu nerfed back to level 1 for "plot" reasons. He does have his own baggage, including not deleting his crazy ex girlfriend's number from his phone ;).
Wyll is the story of an idealist. A major issue with idealists we see is their convictions. Do they practice what they preach, or do they fall into hypocrisy? Judge the devil for eating the pudding, while also eating the pudding.
Karlach is your literal "heart of gold" story. I do think larian cut it shorter than it was intended.
Astarion, he grew on me. I LOVE his VA, and he has a great story surrounding power, control and dominance, If given absolute power, would it corrupt absolutely, or would you use that power to save others? That's the moral dilemma of Astarion.
I am really enjoying seeing Wyll and the other hellion's stories playing out side by side. And predominately why my party is comprised of those two and Shadowheart. Unless I am on a quest that directly involves Astarion, Lae'zel, or Gale.
This really made me think I'll need 2 playthroughs to fully enjoy this game. :)
Lae'Zel - cruel, racist, arrogant, if you crack her shell you lose her anyway
Wyll - loaded with baggage, garbage in battle
Karlach - nice personality, you can't save her, looks gross, exceptional fighter
Halsin - can't control himself, disappears after Act 2
Astarion - the dude is evil, either he becomes an ascendant monster, or he is doomed to darkness
Gale - never met him
Shadowheart - romanced her in the beta, she died immediately in release playthrough, found her irritating in beta
Minthara - why would you want to be an evil monster just to get her in your party?
Dude. Common courtesy dictates you should put spoilers if you're going to outright say what happens with their story. I understand you're salty at Larian, but you should not take out your drama with them amongst the common populace. Please, next time spoilers :V
Edited
Shadowheart has a very interesting story that ties in with some key plot moments, also she gets lots of character development. I'd also recommend Gale, he is overall funny to have around.
Also there's a 6th origin character you can have but she comes a little later after a bit of exploring, related to Wyll's personal quest.
for Astarion is really hard to make a good decision while he in your team, he have kind of evil habbit
Karlach- Omg she so cute beyond her appearance, i like her. its kind like having a thiefling sister
Wyll- is okay with warlock class but i see him a bit boring
Gale- he also like a Wyll but i think gale is more funny and interesting more than wyll
Minthara - its your true partner of being evil, i might getting her while playing dark urge
Halsin- is a bit late to come to your companion, he just a good guy and its hard to like him when you already have decision with your other 3
Jaheira and Minsc- also same with halsin this one is fans service from previous game
for me Lazel and shadowheart is a must, Cleric is a tier 1 class for me, i keep them always in party the others is depend on the enemies and story i would be dealing with
Wasn't a big fan of Wyll, but he did have a lot of extra story bits that were interesting enough. He's not really dynamic though, like not at all.

Jaheira
