Armor Class useless?
Paladin, lvl 4, armor class of 22
get critically stiked 3 times in a drow that is leading the goblins...
is it rigged? Feels that way

your karmic dice is on

AC doesnt help you against critical hits

Turn Karmic dice off. I have an armor class of 22 and basically just watch everything either miss while I wait for the next opportunity to beat it to death

Critical strike is a natural 20 on the dice. It will hit even if your armor class is infinite.
Glyph Aug 21, 2023 @ 10:58am
Doesn't matter how high your ac is if you get critically hit.

Law of small numbers moment

People really struggle with understanding that very small sample sizes are utterly worthless.

If they roll a nat 20 they hit regardless of your ac, also Karmic Dice can make you get hit more often.

i have disabled karmic dice, but still feel like i get hit by about everything
Strez Aug 21, 2023 @ 11:01am
They supposedly fixed Karmic dice, so now it only applies for your rolls and not the enemy's, or at least it only applies positively? idk

I'd still turn it off. Getting a bunch of crits in a row from dumb luck is pretty fun. Especially on my Paladlock.

3 strikes in a Drow should be enough to bring it down :steammocking:

Are you sure you actually got critically striked? The drow is a level 6 paladin and smites your face off if you get close to her.

Even if they were actual crits, three in a row is only a 1 in 8000 chance. It's rare, but not actually that rare.

Overall: the D&D system is pretty bad.

When you got high armor, this won' reduce damage, just make you harder to hit. Crit hits are high roles, in general a 20, but depending on weapon and traits, it might even also be 19, 18, and so on. In that case those also count like a 20 = critical hit.

So it's simply just bad luck. The high role hits you, because high role and on top of that will be a crit.

Sounds like a bad luck streak.
Take a small break then return.

Clearly a skill issue :beeped:

In 2e as long you have a helmet, you're safe from crits. In 3.x a high AC protects you from crits because of the confirmation roll. In 5e a 20 crits, there are some abilities that can let you crit on lower than a 20, but 20 crits.

Edit: 22, while a good AC for that area, isn't hit on a 20 AC. I think the enemies in that area are around a +5 AB (+7 on Tactician) so you would need a 25-27 AC to really see no hits other than crits.
