Lets Be Honest: Fighters Suck
I'm just going to come out and say this, but Fighters Suck in this game.
I have played a Fighter main in every CRPG (ever) and have never felt so under powered.
I have always played by the rule that in my Characters purely "Physical Might and Skill with a Sword and Shield" can win the day in most cases.

In BG3 this is entirely the opposite. The fighter Class/Subclasses are Subpar when comparing them to Things like Paladins, and Warrior Priests (Cleric of Talos lightning builds come to mind), and then Multi-classing those Classes into Sorcerers, just becoming Unstoppable.

I have so far converted Karlach and Astarion both into Paladins, and converted my main into a Lightning Priest THOR Build, with a Sorcerer Feat at lvl 4, and I am basically unstoppable with AC 19 (21 with Shield of Faith) and Blasting baddies across the room with Thunderwave and Call Lightning, doing 30+ damage a hit.

Fighters would not be so bad if you could rely on their damage, but the RNG Gods hate me, and the majority of the times I run up and it's a swing and a miss!(Constantly) Even Blessed.

I have never felt like fighters were a bad choice, even in PnP DnD scenarios, and in BG2 My Fighter Main was an absolute Beast, walking around with Dual Lightning Katana's and Dragon Armor literally insta-gibbing (see: Chunks Flying) most man size targets.

In this game Fighters even up to level 6 are just awful, when compared to Paladins with Heavy Armor, self heals, and Buffs, Brands, Holy Channel powers, Double Attacks, and Super high Charisma, which ties perfectly into a Sorcerer Multi-Class.

Currently for me Karlach as a Paladin, does on average of 35 pts of damage per turn, sometimes spiking to 45-50 pts if both attacks hit.

As a Fighter?Barbarian? her average is 15 pts. Pathetic.

Paladins get all the benefits of a Fighter ( Heavy Armor, Shields, two attacks, Access to all Weapon Types, All the Same Feats, but come with self heals, buffs, Brands, Holy Powers, Great Charisma for Dialogue and persuasion/Intimidation, and Tankiness beyond anything a fighter could ever hope for.

Let me know your thoughts.

My fighter, by being supported by my casters, killed a 600+ hp boss in 2 rounds with near-0 resource investment
I they are *plenty* powerful.
My minimum, 0 investment damage per round is around 100, without any kind of buffs or short/long rest resources being expended (i.e no spells, no action surge, no superiority dice)
My maximum with buffs is well into the 4-500s, and im not even fully optimized.

I believe the correct response to this OP, is "Skill Issue"

And let's not forget that fighters are never hindered by pesky silence or counterspells.

My fighter carries the whole party.
Just put haste on him and see it unfold.

Uh, fighter's don't suck. Like at all do they suck.

Fighters with a bonus action jump/shove are really good in this game, especially Lae'zel.

They get everything they have back on a short rest, precision attack, trip attack, pushing attack, and riposte are all good abilities.

Action surge is really good, use it at the start of a fight and you just get four attacks in one go. A hasted fighter at level 6 can attack 6 times. That's enough to kill most enemies outright if you built them well.

They get extra feats, a fighting style, second wind which is a bonus action heal.

They're really good in this game.

Paladins are good too mind you, but paladins are totally reliant on spell slots to deal competitive damage and they don't get that many. Sure you'll outdo the fighter with smites but at level 6 you only have a very limited number of smites to use and smite does not do that much damage. A level 1 smite does 9 damage on average.

If you think fighters suck get Lae'zel the returning pike and the ring that increases thrown weapon damage and watch her destroy most of the game by herself.

Fighter is and has always being one the most OP class in dnd when fighting is involved. The main issue of the class is that there are almost 0 utilities outside of a battle. But in a fight, I'll take a fighter in a party over most of any other class.
They're just killing machines that are easily buffed to oblivion.

Fighters get more feats than other martial classes, so you can tailor the experience to your liking. You could do a dex build fighter with Medium Armor Master. Or you could 2h style with pole arm master, or charger or resilence, etc. The biggest limiting factor for fighters in the BG3 version of the game, is they didn't include all of the feats in the PHB and other source books. So if the available feats were more inclusive the fighter class by default would be better. That said, both battle master and eldritch knight are fun to play. Do they do as much raw damage as Barbarians, not on a baseline level, but creative builds can do more. Also, min maxing is only one way to play the game.

They don't, expecially if you take the spellcasting subclass.

I do agree that it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that they removed the human and fighter extra talents, though. It basically defeats the reason to be a fighter, while paladin is also a choice. Divine Smit not being focused on a single alignment makes it a lot stronger.

Fighter is good but if you choose champion you're doing something wrong unless your doing a 3 level dip for some kind of barbarian / warlock / paladin crit fishing build

Eh, fullcasters are still exponential compared to linear martials in 5e
Fighters are hardcarried by the insane magic items this game has on offer.

have you tried casting haste on your fighter?
Carma Aug 21, 2023 @ 9:52am
Ya dude, sorry but my fighter usually carries the group, does the most damage by quite a bit, Very much think you need to have a second look at the fighter mechanics, they rock.
