I they are *plenty* powerful.
My minimum, 0 investment damage per round is around 100, without any kind of buffs or short/long rest resources being expended (i.e no spells, no action surge, no superiority dice)
My maximum with buffs is well into the 4-500s, and im not even fully optimized.
Just put haste on him and see it unfold.
Fighters with a bonus action jump/shove are really good in this game, especially Lae'zel.
They get everything they have back on a short rest, precision attack, trip attack, pushing attack, and riposte are all good abilities.
Action surge is really good, use it at the start of a fight and you just get four attacks in one go. A hasted fighter at level 6 can attack 6 times. That's enough to kill most enemies outright if you built them well.
They get extra feats, a fighting style, second wind which is a bonus action heal.
They're really good in this game.
Paladins are good too mind you, but paladins are totally reliant on spell slots to deal competitive damage and they don't get that many. Sure you'll outdo the fighter with smites but at level 6 you only have a very limited number of smites to use and smite does not do that much damage. A level 1 smite does 9 damage on average.
If you think fighters suck get Lae'zel the returning pike and the ring that increases thrown weapon damage and watch her destroy most of the game by herself.
They're just killing machines that are easily buffed to oblivion.
I do agree that it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that they removed the human and fighter extra talents, though. It basically defeats the reason to be a fighter, while paladin is also a choice. Divine Smit not being focused on a single alignment makes it a lot stronger.
Fighters are hardcarried by the insane magic items this game has on offer.
have you tried casting haste on your fighter?
