About Orpheus, Githyanki and Githzerai (spoilers)
Am I the only one who thinks that Orpheus and his followers have far more parallels to Zerthimon and the Githzerai than to the Githyanki people themselves?

On the one hand, Orpheus doesn't seem like a typical Githyanki Evil Lawful, but rather a Neutral Lawful with a strong sense of honor, willing to help you in your fight, free his people, and sacrifice himself before losing his sanity by becoming a mind flayer. He doesn't have one iota of that typical Githyanki racial superiority (like Lae'zel herself at the beginning).

On the other hand, Orpheus's psionic powers are very reminiscent of the ascension of Zerthimon himself, no?

Is it possible that in the future (DLCs, expansions) it will be revealed that Orpheus was, in his day, a follower of Zerthimon? I have a hard time picturing him as a Githyanki tyrant, with all that is featured about him in the game. He never, ever, speaks of conquest, but of the liberation of the people from him.

I felt the same way. I'm wondering if Larian decided not to specifically call him a githzerai to simplify things. And now I'm wondering if he ever actually calls himself a githyanki ( I haven't saved him in any playthrough yet, but will soon).

According to the Wiki, Orpheus was indeed part of the Githzerai https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Orpheus

Orpheus probably shouldn't even look like a Githyanki, he dates from a much earlier time in their history, he was likely there for the schism between the Githyanki and the Githzerai and remembers when they were one people. He shouldn't have the mutations that Githyanki have. He was there before the Vlaakiths imbued them with their cultural fanaticism.

There is no mention of the Githzerai or Zerthimon in the dialogue with Orpheus. There is also no allusion to him agreeing more with the Githyanki than the Githzerai, or that he, being so old, still sees them all as Gith. It is simply assumed that he is a Githyanki, and the true heir.

I think the same as you, that they did it to simplify things, although it honestly seems a little strange to me because Orpheus himself, despite being a key part of the Githyanki, conflicts with the very essence of the Githyanki. If Gith had been like Orpheus, there would have never been a civil war.
