Any ideas on how to defeat Z'rell?
This is after the nightsong prison.
This is bothering me loads. she counters every big spell.
Slow is cast on you every time she attacks
a lot of her minions have at least 60hp (none of mine has that much)
Any tips?

She only gets one reaction. Potion of speed or haste will give you two casts.

If you keep your caster out of range of counterspell, she can't counter your caster.

You can also cause her to waste her counterspells by casting lower level stuff. If she counters it, she spent at least a 3 to counter a level 2. Once she's out of level 3-5, lay waste with your heavies.

Finally, and I can't stress this one enough... potion of speed on your fighter or paladin will get them right in her face with 4 attacks. Do that with an archer (ranger+hunter's mark) or warlock(+hex) as well, and you've got a heck of a lot of attacks on her. Focus fire. Take her down. Then trash everyone else.

Try to flank her from side, place your range companions on the ceiling, use hold person thn hide in corner to avoid getting hit out of concentration, thn spam magic missile. NPCs at the front door are gonna aggro most of the enemies so you should be able to kill her off in 2-3 turns.

What NPCs at the front door?

The Harpers that ideally you are attacking the keep with... This being BG3, it's entirely possible that you slaughtered the Harpers and are doing this alone.

Do you have Jaheria and the Harpers with you?

I literally CC'd her and her entire group of cronies at the bottom of the stairs and just picked off their weak guys as they came towards the stairs. Jaheira and the Harpers will distract them to the point that you probably won't even take actual damage with your party.
Kill her before you leave for the temple of Shar, after getting stuck and having all the Harpers die in my last run, my new run is seeing how many of them I can murder without anyone noticing.

After accepting the 'quest' from her to help out Balthazar I noticed she walked into a library alone, just ganged up and murdered her. Not going through that black hole/darkness/something something hadar bs again.

You can try coming at the building from the side instead of through the stairs, it disrupts a lot of the really annoying staircase CC they'll do if you give them the chance

Well 4 hours is enough in trying to win this fight with each attempt having nowhere near doing it.
Time to cheat with WEMOD

I've had this game since when it was released in EA and bought it because I enjoyed playing bg 1 and 2 long ago and if I knew this was going to be as hard as this I wouldn't have bothered with it. I feel this is not bg 3 but dos 3 as it is very similar to dos2 which is another game I struggled with and never finished. I think they used balders gate as a marketing ploy.

I wonder, does the city of balders gate look similar to the old balders gate or the D&D baldurs gate

No harpers as they are all dead. How did you manage to keep them alive in Last Light Inn. I thought they all ended up the enemy

If you are legit looking for help always post your party comp/level and what you have tried. That said:

Summons, as in every CRPG, are amazing because they soak damage that would otherwise be dropping on your guys. The Harpers serve this purpose as well. Get a spiritual weapon out even if that is the only summon you have. Speed potions for melees, hell maybe everyone just to get out of the kill zone that is the stairs. Once you are out of there and know who to focus on (the adepts), this is not a hard fight. If you have done everything Act 1/2 you should be level 9 here.

As for Counterspell they will usually counter the first cast so just make sure its a throwaway like Hunter's Mark or Hex or something else you can do with a bonus action.

Harpers helps a lot.

To be honest, it is extremlu hard fight. And after you kill Z'rell prepare self for pure hell. :))

BOOM BOOM guys will come :))

I dont remember the fight as anything special. I did use speed and three melees, so her counterspelling wasn't a problem. I find there are few problems that mobile strikers cannot solve. My caster was using thrown bombs. Also, as mentioned before, summonings are good. You can pick up a couple of specials in act 3.

You lost them in the fight for Isobel I guess? You can win that fight.
Kill the guy coming for her, and put CC spells in front of the door for the room you are in. The enemy will try to swarm her. Also, you can heal her.

So this must be my problem. The highest level of my party is 6 or 4 with 2 of another class by multi classing. No way am I going back. I will just have to struggle on.......Oh heck I'm going to have to start again ( once I've had my wicked way with Shadowheart lol (she's 88% atm)
