If you press "new game" instead of "continue" your character and progress will be saved in a separate campaign, easy to distinguish. It will not overwrite your friend's progress in any way.
The "issue" you encounter is because of the game not differentiating between who is logged in or not. All save games on a Windows user are located at the same place.
You have two options to have your own "savegames separated" from your friend's
option A, launch the game directly from the executable using a different Windows profile as described here
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3020212758
option B, launch the game twice via the executable while Steam is off, as described here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3015842445
the second instance of the game will go into a debug profile which you can use as your own, when that happens - you will notice by reset tutorial messages and EULA prompt - you can close the first instance with the main profile
Using a launcher or a Larian Account or a Steam Account is not required for what you wish to do. Happy adventuring!
Oh my God, you're a legend. Thank you so much
