Does the story captivate you? Be honest
No hate, just curiosity. I am at the very end of Act 2 and I am yet to get captivated.
Can YOU tell me (without spoilers) that you had an epic story moment so far where you said "wow, this story is amazing"?
Or maybe an epic moment with a companion? I don't mean dice roll wise. I mean story wise only.

As an example - I can recall most of Mass Effect story moments. They were amazing and captivating. Hell, even Arma 3 had moments where I said "Oh ♥♥♥♥".
Not in BG3 so far, and I am trying. I really am.

We keep meeting new characters and story develops to "oh, so this dude is behind all this. No, now it's this dude, and now this one". I've never met them before, I have not much investment in any of this.
My tadpole is the only push and yet there is no real desperation in finding a cure.
Half the people you meet in the story have tadpoles in them and it seems none of them are transforming either. There's zero feel or urgency. Hell, Shepard felt like the world was burning around him during ME3 and it showed in the way he acted.
The tadpoles may as well be as bad as a tiny splinter in your finger.
I don't see one good villain or any bond with any characters, or any big epic moments. This is just meh.
The very opening of BG3 was nice, and also the fight I just had at the very end of Act 2. Those were good, but why so few?

I have distanced myself from my companions as the interaction between them is either distant/generic or romance (same sex or not). It's boring.

I still don't know anything, I'm being tricked by everyone. I'd rather have a mediocre, smooth story than an ending like in Mass Effect 3 or a middle and ending like in Neverwinter Nights 2

No i play mostly this type of games for the companion stories.
most games the "main story" is generic.

Wyll: i like it till so far (ACT III)
Shadowheart: hmm nothing particular special
Gale: seams interesting enough
Astarion: nah boring vampy against master to Cliché
Lae'zel: Like it, the fanatic getting betrayed
Karlach: spit on it. bah bah bah

I'm enjoying the story far more than I expected to. After playing a bit of the EA I liked the gameplay, but after DoS 1/2 I was concerned about how mediocre the writing might be. I've been pleasantly surprised so far.

What I'm gathering from this thread is that most have never paid attention to game, or are not playing the game altogether. The only other explationation I can give is that we're both playing completely different games.

I bought this game for the sex, but the story and gameplay are excellent too.

No, I didn't expect it to either. The story's probably gonna be non-existent until act 3 where the game will drop plot twists on me and half of them will go over my head because the plot will have been ignored for the most part

When I want good story, I usually go for works that are explicitly stories, books, visual novels, etc

As someone who grew up with and loves the originals I have been drinking the lore and story up and enjoying it all. Its the kind of game where you can take hours just reading everything you find and going I GET THAT REFERENCE, or you can have no link to the originals and just play it fresh. I feel like a lot of the story felt urgent initially but once you realise there is no time limit you can just kinda do whatever. It is a good plot but the relic is the best mcguffin armor I have seen in a game in a long time lol

My son and I been playing co-op for our first play through, in Act 3. There have been plenty of amazing story moments.

From reading the OP it sounds like you went in with some judgement, did you read one to many forum posts on the subject before getting the game or something? Because the moment I talked to Nettie was it, in the druid grove, and found out we should of all turned already I knew something else was going on. From there to story just got deeper as it began to unfold. So good, some great little side quests too like the hag.

I dozed off during Act 2 but Act 3 perked me back up. I spent hours fretting over how to handle the main portion. And I rescued just about everyone I could in Act 1 and 2 so my Act 3 was brimming with quests that capped off the end of their stories.

Am I supposed to be remembering every game I play for years after I've played it? I didn't realize that was necessary to the enjoyment of gaming.
It was a fun story, I enjoyed it, but it's over and i'm on to the next great game. And there are plenty of great games out there.

It had its ups and downs, the game focused too much about stuff that didnt really matter to me for the big picture. The whole refugee stuff in act 3, like there is bigger fish to fry, i dont care. Some side quests were intriguing, some forgetable.
The 3 big baddies, only 1 was interesting, the other 2 are comic book villains
Orin need to stfu for real.
Garthocs motives are laughably shallow
Kethrec is the most interesting of all, the best story.

Lazael i didnt like her at first, but her story arch is decent and makes her overall character a lot better if you go through to the end with it, same with Shadowheart.
Karlachs dialogue is 4 INT lucky for her you cant go lower than 8, i cant stand most things she says.
Gayles story never made much sense to me

I found the devils the most captivating out of all the characters

Act 1 was best, Act 2 was meh, Act 3 was ok.
I do like the game a lot and i plan to do at least 3 runs

Kethrec was criminally underused. He seemingly had the strongest connection to his god, considering what happens after his demise, he takes the centerpiece, and he personally had so many connections to the heroes (his daughter, the angel, the massive army, the fact that he had managed to engulf an entire area into darkness). I fully expected him to reemerge, but he was just... gone in act 2.

And Gortash and Orin simply can't compete. Orin feels like an OG fanfic character. Her weapons and armor look ridiculous; she can teleport way easier than a mage, but she is actually a rogue; she can shapeshift; she can perfectly keep her disguise despite being a raging maniac; she is Sarevok's daughter; she is a Bhaalspawn; she has demon form; she is everywhere; she easily kidnaps people from your camp; and also, Bhaal thinks she is the bestest thing ever and blesses her with something even the MC of the first game wasn't able to attain and only got in the second game. Like, come on! She is just silly, and she dies nearly instantly in her own boss fight.

And then we have Gortash. He... paid people to slander you in the newspapers. That's pretty much all. Boring. It feels like Gortash should have died in Act 1, Orin in act 2 and Kethrec being the main baddy of act 3 leading his army, while you are gathering allies.

Raphael and Auntie, on the other hand. They are cool. But with them gone, I am struggling to find strength to finish the game.

I am in Riventon and have to agree.
And also have to add how the main plot is full of holes.
Emperor, a mind flayer, you know a parasite that devourers its victim to grow up, suddenly gets memories back of its victim, claiming that it was him originally? When Withers previously says that Mind Flayers are soulless creatures? And withers being jergal i would say he knows what he is talking about. The Mind flayer also never really explains why he chose a few random dudes to free from the elder brain's grasp, when he could do the same with other mind flayers. And according to him this mind flayer form is the top of the evolution sooo...sadly the story is quite revolting with its inconsistencies and major plotholes.

Currently the only thing keeping me going is Shadowheart's story, even though during EA and act 1 i already had a decent idea what might be her true story and it is quite similar. Of course i mean the selunite selection:P not sideing with Shar and beceoming a DJ

On a subject of plot holes...

Orin is Sarevok's daughter. She physically can't be a Bhaalspawn, because only direct offspring of Bhaal can be his spawn. Their children's blood is too thin. So, either Bhaal took a female form and screwed with his own son, or the authors did not care.
