What I did was I attended his coronation ceremony, then told Wyll to give Mizora a middle finger. Then I went exploring the city and found the submarine and underwater prison on my own. Saved all the gnomes and Wyll's father. Then went and destroyed the Steel Watch with helpful gnomes.
Then sneaked around and on top of the Gortash's fort straight to his room and just killed him in one round and got that achievement for no traps. Easy.
If you freed him before facing Gortash, he would not be able to use him as hostage.
Oh. I see. Damn. I tried many things, but everytime, Absolute burns him to ashes.
He was'nt there when I went there... There was only another lady.
It's the same underwater prison in where the families of the slaves at the Foundry are being held.
That was my experience when i did this fight last night as well. Tried to knock him out, he dies anyway, and along comes Mizora with a new deal for Wyll. Reminds me of Shadowhearts quest conclusion. It's almost like the quests had the same writer, and the writer wasn't interested in truly happy endings.
Disengaging from the fight is pretty tricky as you cannot get enough distance in the direction towards baldurs gate (where Mizora stands) as the duke can see you from the balcony. I split my party up - hid most next to Mizora and flew with one (not hidden) character to Wyrmscrossing to get enough distance to disengage. You can then talk to the devil and progress the quest.
After a long rest, the duke remains in the fortress and is still hostile. You can sneak around him to keep him alive.
In the Quest I chose not the sign the contract and therefore not to save the duke. The Questlog updated with the information that we stopped following the fate of the duke. But nothing in the questlog indicates that the duke died. However, some dialog options with Mizora imply the duke's death.
I haven't finished the game and I, therefore, don't know if the duke will be still alive in the epilog, but for now, I can still find him in the fortress alive and kicking.
I have never skipped it.
