What is the actual controversy?
So I've been seeing some YouTubers recommending BG3 and they always mention something along the lines of "despite the controversy", but they never actually explain what it is. I tried googling it, saw a mixture of "gay sex scene", "sex scene at all", and even a "the women are too fit and sexy" article. So what is the actual controversy?

Is it gay sex scenes? Are the characters so attractive and scantily clad I'll need to take frequent bathroom breaks? Is the price tag alone scandalous?

Why not try and play the game, and if you find something you don't like, then come back. It's important to remember that the people who like the game and are having fun are in game, but those who dislike the game and want to complain are in the forums. Make up your own mind first.
In short, some possibly bugged or poorly written dialogue strings can trigger instances of characters trying to bang you despite gender.

Some players keep roasting people for complaining about it saying that all they have to do is select a dialogue option to get it to stop, but there have been complaints that it doesn't stop, so its creating an atmosphere of constant sexual harassment.

People that voice this get called phobic.

That's pretty much the whole thing.

The women being fit and sexy are literally all armor wearing melee combatants and warriors. It's a practical design choice given their roles.

I mean I get what you're saying, but it is a $60 investment. I don't feel like two hours of play with these kind of games is enough to get a real hold over whether I liked it or not, I had the same experience with Dark Souls. I got why some people liked it, I just didn't, but I had played too much to get a refund.

I want to say this isn't a joke post, genuinely want to know.

It's not really a controversy, it's more of a jester award factory

It's just another made-up culture war by conservatives. Gotta keep the anti-woke people riled up so they can keep conservative politicians and media personalities profitable and in power.

Homophobes are mad that all companions are player-sexual in this game, so you can have gay/lesbian romance with all of them, depending on your character's gender. Now they're spamming countless threads on this board with their vile homophobic ♥♥♥♥, and the mods do almost nothing.
There's no controversy.
This game is SO INSANELY POPULAR it attracts bored perpetually online people who have nothing better to do but troll. They're not serious with their trolling, so don't dig too deep into it :V.

You can dress your lady or guy companions in scampy clothing if it so fits you, you can have them in their undies, or nude. You can change their class even with the respec guy.

There is no controversy. Just a small handful of trolls desperate for bites. Empty vessels, and all that.

The issue, as I understand it, is some combination of the following:
  1. All companions are bisexual.
  2. Some companions don't understand that "No means no" and approach the player multiple times seeking sex.
  3. The threshold to start a "romance" is very, very low -- unless you go out of your way to anger a companion, it is almost certain that you will receive offers of sex within 1-2 hours of your first meeting.
Part of #2 is caused by players seeking a platonic relationship with a companion -- no such relationship exists, so any response that isn't "Let's keep things professional" is treated as "I want to have sex with you."

Another part of the issue is that some, although not most, of the relationships are overtly sexual -- closer to "Hey, let's bone" than "I want to marry you."

The controversy is that game has been overhyped as perfect, game-changing blockbuster, but in fact it turned out to be just a solid game. Not a shining star everyone tended to believe before actually playing it.

So now more and more people playing past Act 1 and encountering bugs, unfinished companion relations, a lot of boring Divinity-style pixelhunting, as well as soo much inconsistencies with DnD and classic roleplay (Muh priestess of Shar who is a Paladin (with WORKING lay of hands!!), wielding Mace of Lathander, and that is only one of many examples).

And so these people say "hey gyus, maybe this BG3 game is not as good as we thought?" - and gets immediately shout at by fanboys (most of whom never made it past ActI).

This is basically the said controversy.

It is the culture war between the woke and the anti woke.

Sort version:
The character creator allows you to add penis or a vergina.
You have bodytypes instead of genders.
The game has a very pro-refugee story.
And the game has being nice leads to a sex scene.
Which lead a lot of people to unintented sex scene's as they where just being nice instead of romantic.
Gale is the biggest offender.

A lot of anti woke are hating on the game for catering to the woke(body types)
And with the culture war going on catering to the woke or the anti woke leads being hated by one or the other side.

The actual controversy is the game was released as a "complete game" with no micro-transactions or predatory monetary systems, as is becoming more and more common. A good example would be the current state of Diablo IV.

All the sex stuff is just over bloated whinging and whining from a section of people who have no interest in actual gaming but are more focused on making people acknowledge, and even praise, their sad, twisted and angry view of the world in general.
