Are shields worth it?
I have a shielded Paladin and I feel like he dies pretty much just as easily as everyone else.

PS Pala would curb a rogue with ease

Vengeance Paladin with titanium splint armour, baldurans giantslayer, any combination of the gear from hell to fill the slots, deathstalker mantle. Infinite crits, massive burst, can kill multiple enemies per turn or a boss in a single turn, then go invisible. Factor in the illithid upgrades like flight and displacer, and you can take on the entire game with a single character. I would advise using the helmet you get with baldurans sword for the +2hp per turn.

My exact setup lmao altho i did first playthrough without consuming tadpoles and i just carried my party through the entire game

Plus 2 AC with the ability to get more through magic sheilds can be worth it for certain builds.
Sheilds are better than duel swords in my view but worse than two handed weapons if you choose to get the great weapon feat. But that is in general and many specific builds and combos with other classes may find the opposite.

And don't forget the acid ring, which I'm sure half of us are using xD

I would say shields are worth it if you want a bit more safety. You don't even lose to much damage. Here for example paladin:

edit: ok scratch that, i forgot that great weapon master is only active with two handed weapons, with 1h shield the dmg goes down:

- greatsword: 2d6+2 magic + 5 str + d8 passiv smite + 10 great weapon master = 28,5 dmg
- longsword d8 + 2 magic + 5 str + d8 passiv smite = 16 dmg

-> You lose nearly 50% dmg with shield and paladin is one of the attacker classes with extra attacks / dmg bonusses which shouldn't be gimped with shield.

Best shield you can get is afair +3 at moonrise tower earliest and best armor heavy +21 AC on top of that there are some AC items like ring +1, glove + 1, boot +1 and of course feat bonuses. So you can have around let's say 25 AC easy endgame. Enemies with + 4 attribute, +4 prof need to roll a 17+ to even hit you (20% hit chance).

There are also some more +dmg items like a +2 acid dmg ring or helm with +2 attack/dmg which means the dmg gap becomes even closer.

Complete shadowhearts questline. It has more in act 3. That's where you get the best shield in the game.

2H damage is better than 2ac.

Use spells to get you to mathematical breakpoints. Once you're at 75% avoidance rate, you should optimize damage.

Seems like a straight up build issue

I use shields for the effect they have.. the 2ac is incidental.

I swap between my 2HD and 1H and Shield depending on how i feel both are very effective in the hands of a well built Pala

Shield master is pretty dope.

On shadowheart with one of the best 2 shields in the game, most definitely

Great Weapon Masterity working with one-handed and shield? Looks like a bug for me =/

I just wish there was a way to play like you're playing a dark souls str build. Dual wielding massive swords bigger than your body and smushing the enemy.
