Can't steal the ceremonial battleaxe.
So, there's this ceremonial battleaxe you need to take to solve a puzzle, only problem is there's a guardian of faith watching over it.

So I decide "No problem, I'll just use a mage hand to move it out of its line of sight, then quietly steal it" So I do that, but a battle still starts.

But the guardian can't see me, so I slip away quietly and flee.

Problem solved right? Well, when I try to place the battleaxe on the altar, my character is suddenly knocked over, and a battle starts despite the guardian being a mile away.

What the hell?! I feel like I'm being railroaded into fighting that thing by an A-hole DM.

Any idea how to sort this out?

Felt to me like I had to make the choice between getting the treasure or letting the birds live. If you care so much about the birbs leave the treasure

That’s illegal

You can always knock the birds out if killing is against your RP. Not like it matters either way. Kill them or don't it has zero impact on anything else in the game as far as I can tell.

Okay, there seems to be some confusion. I'm not talking about the warhammer in the eagle's nest.

I'm talking about the battleaxe in the sealed room.

Did you try to steal it in turn-based combat and then just leave / ultimately "flee" combat once you're far enough away?

edit sorry, only answered to the title question. The real question is "Have the battleaxe, but why isn't it recognised by the altar. Is it because I didn't kill the guardian spirit?"

cant you jsut kill the guardian with ranged attacks outside of its counter attack radius ?

are you sure you're placing the battle axe on the correct altar?

After noticing the warhammer, that might be the case.

Just kill the guardian?

You can talk to the birds and convince them you are ok, then send your party down into building and hide them. Send a mage hand up and get it to throw the maul out of the nest and down a lvl so you can get it, then dismiss the hand and the birds will be ok so long as your party was not dragged into the fight. Maybe something similar can be used with the guardian but i killed it since it had no dialogue.
4 ceremonial weapons and 4 altars, the stain glass gives the hint, some books will too.

Okay, I've resolved the matter now.

To sort out some of the confusion allow me to explain, I was unaware that I was placing the battleaxe on the wrong altar, as I didn't know the stained glass window was supposed to depict a warhammer at the time, I didn't realise there even was a warhammer as I hadn't been to the eagle's nest yet.

The eagles were no problem by the way, nothing that wild shaping into a cat and luring them away with a little meowing couldn't fix.
