You have to rotate the four circles until all the black circles are on the bottom.
Else, what you might be referring to is just an aesthetic.
Oh, and what does the Selunite key you find on the skeleton on top of the gate there open... if not the gate? the nearby chests? (don't know because I picked them on the way down).
turns out you get 30xp for shooting the main crystal with an arrow, so it's clearly something they thought about.
FYI to everyone here. You don't have to destroy the crystal to get in/out of the gates. You can shoot the statues' eyes with an arrow or cantrip to temporarily disable them. They will shoot 3 radiant missiles in random directions along the bridge and then be deactivated for 1 turn. It's best to do this in turn based mode to help you make sure you don't get hit. You will know they are deactivated when the glowing blue eyes go dark.
It's a really nice feature, especially if you wanted to RP a worshiper of Selune. It's also super helpful in defeating the other two minotaurs, and has potential to hit the spectator if you can lure it over through the gate.
