Did you get back to camp with a Summon or a Wild-Shaped Druid?
This can sometimes cause NPCs to freak out and run away, sometimes to some pretty insane distances.
Some will disappear from the map until after a long rest.

Game's bugged in various ways. I never saw the owlbear in camp, but it sure triggered events and was in the ending.

Petting the owl bear doesn't make everyone happy, petting the dog did.. and i liked to throw the ball for the dog, but the owl bear doesn't collect it. :D
