Funny thing it seems it only warns if you are coming from a certain path, then it gives a warning from a decent range. If you come from another path it will only give warning too late.
That isn't a notification - it's a buff. IIRC, I think it gives you advantage for one round, as you were warned ahead of time.
The issue you might've run into is exactly what happened to me - I clicked so far into the distance that, instead of stopping and waiting for direction, my party continued on. This meant that the time between Lae'zel sounding the alarm and rolling for initiative was basically nonexistent.
