Starting race, can someone please explain?
In the following Youtube video the guy says that a Drow is a bad choice for close combat since he lacks the weapon proficiency, but isn´t that something also given by the class you choose?

I play a Drow Paladin and have no problems with wielding most two handers.

The point is if you're making a martial character, then racial weapon and armor proficiencies are mostly useless because most martials get all that anyway.

The free proficiency is redundant if you're playing a class that also gets that proficiency. This is not a big deal in the end.

Racial weapon proficiencies are almost entirely flavor. Generally, if you're making a character who's going to be any good with weapons, they'll get weapon proficiencies from their class.

basically another badly done youtube trying to sound like they are an "expert".

Racial bonuses were slapped hard by Larian so they are almost pure flavor now. I mean if you really want a melee character based on race go wood elf for the increased movement, or Half-orc for the triple crit dmg.

Even then you can easily play another race and be fine.

Even the idea of Shield dwarf giving armor prof can be negated by classes like Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer.

In the end the min/max will say "do this" and the majority of players who do know wtf they are doing, will look and say "not worth it"

So, if you want to min/max then the guy is correct.

Drow have the following racial proficiencies:

Base movespeed of 9 meters per turn.
Proficiency with rapiers, shortswords, and hand crossbows.
Superior Darkvision grants 24 meters.

So to get proficiency for 2 handed weapons and heavy armor, you need to assign Feats to be to those things.

In reality though, it is no big deal.

Doesn't really matter what race you play. Game is easy enough. Don't need to min-max at all.

Yes, if you are going to be a class which normally doesn´t use a two hander. But who makes a wizard and wastes a feat on getting weapon skills?

If you choose warrior you have no problems, the warrior already comes packed with most weapons at his disposal.

Well it's not complete nonsense. Some races have bonus proficients, like dwarf can get heavy armour and martial weapons without being a class that also has them.
But you are right that a class also provides the 'required' proficiency you need.

the best caster class is lore bard because they get 3 cross class spells

the best martial class is fighter battlemaster because disarming people and looting their weapons is boss breaking, and knocking people off ledges is so easy, aunties fall down chasms just like mobs

the best race is githyanki because they get jump and shadow step spells for free

And he is saying.. To min/max, those racial proficiencies can be optimized.. And when you optimize, you can then not have to waste a feat selection.

At most it gives you 2 or 4 ability points, but he is absolutely correct. I don't min/max.. But you can.
