If you'd like something resembling logic, look into Pathfinder games. Not without problems either but of a different kind.
Of course spell sniper doesnt apply to physical attacks, who would have guessed.
Half-orcs still make the best melee martials, who would have guessed!
Yes, they are excellent, but don't discount some of the other races. Extra movement from wood(half)elf is great, as are the smite spells zariel tieflings get, as is rerolling 1s for halflings.
One of the earliest is the knife of the undermountain king (which is probably one of the best paladin weapons in the game early on, IF you don't have a caster that can hold person/monster).
