Because Astarion is 100% in it for himself.

If you want his approval for an action, it needs to either benefit him (a reward, or directly relevant to his interests), or at least be funny to him.

Yes yes, I understand that Astarion is selfish and needs to personally benefit or see guile if he's going to approve of my actions.

Because every time you stop to help a kitten out of a tree or whatever, that's time being spent on things that AREN'T Astarion or Astarion-related, and he's enough of a little prick to actively disapprove if you do anything that doesn't benefit him somehow.

Astarion is a genuinely evil individual. He is one of the few consistent characters that doesn't care about anything considered normally "good".

That's what I've always hated about companions with approval systems. We're helping this one person so we can get in their good graces to betray them LATER. Stupid vampire. Lae'zel is a pain too. It's like I'm not giving them a thousand gold, or a blood oath, I'm just saying "Yeah I'll look into that" to a quest giver.

For the most part everyone should disapprove you doing side quests for a majority of act 1, You survived a ship crash with a time bomb in your head and you're sorting out Racial tensions in a hippy camp, you have more important things to worry about.

He probably didn't care that you helped find her mom. I do lots of quests like that. What he cares is that you did it for stupid emotional reasons instead of gold or slaughter. What a waste of time.
