No Offense.
But this is their Stories.
Of Course You wont get most of it if You dont have them around.
Albeit I do think You should be able to Send Hirelings to Camp.
The issue is there is no way to even temporarily send them to camp for anyone, even killing the character doesn't get them removed from the party.

So a random or friend can jump into your existing session, make a custom character - and now that char is stuck in your party forever.
Who wants to replay those companions? In a second playtrough maybe but a 3th and 4th is never gonna happen for me without custom party options.
Bg1 and bg2 could be replayed almost infinitely with all the party member combinations. in this game every one is already always there, add to that no custom party options and it really ruins the replay value of the game.
A dungeons and dragons game without a custom party option is just not done imo, every dnd game should have options to play your own fun party aside from set partymembers.
They just had to do the damn origin nonsense from Original sin 2.
What do you mean they disabled you from full custom parties for this reason? I am not using any mods and there was no warning or anything, I literally got excited about playing D&D with some friends remotely and started up a session only to find this out later. There was no warning, nothing blocking me from creating a 4 player custom campaign... had there been any sort of warning or popup that it might block off whole quest lines i would have reconsidered.
What he means is that Larian didn't mean for us to play custom parties, sure you can work around it but as Chicken man said you will have to pay the price.
I know, it sucks.
Understood, well thats lame. This should be talked about more so more players don't figure it out about 5 hours into a playthrough. I think it would be pretty easy for them to put a disclaimer when you are in the character creator and have 4 people making a custom. Idk, any sort of heads up or work around would be good.
I cant imagine it would be that difficult to send a custom to camp, but I did notice the space in camp is limited so maybe they didn't plan ahead to have a camp spot for customs to hang out at.
I did slightly misunderstand what you meant, as I thought you used 4 player coop to make a single player game, but the same thing applies. They allow for 4 player coop but yeah that happens.
I would say that mods have bigger party sizes this may allow you to do what you want with your friends while still doing quests. But it also adds replay value if you come back you can then experience those quests in another game, so it's not all bad. The main character quests only tell stories they don't really offer xp or anything last I checked. Just some direction really.
