Why does prone instantly break concentration?
I can't be the only one getting really annoyed that falling prone breaks your concentration without a check. I'm just trying to get hex to stay up for more than one fight and every time I see that a concentration check is made it says it succeeds, but when I fall prone I just instantly break concentration. This can't possibly be how the devs intended it to work, can it? In 5e rules this is certainly not the case, and it's definitely not for immersion or anything, as I can personally concentrate a lot better when falling down than when getting stabbed, shot, burned, electrocuted, poisoned, etc.

Prone makes you unconscious, you need to be conscious to concentrate

No it doesn't. You don't immediately faint the second someone trips you.

This still doesn't explain *why* they would add such a rule. It adds nothing good to the gameplay and doesn't make sense.

Thanks friend

Prone has nothing to do with being unconscious, but maybe the characters lose their concentration cause it caused a great deal of pain when they fell prone?

More painful than being smashed in the face with a greatsword or whatever - and in fact, so painful that it breaks the standard rules by allowing NO save whatsoever?

Maybe you have to make magical arm movements and dances to keep your spell going and make sure that glowing death axe you summoned keeps swinging, and being prone messes up your rhythm. Just be glad you need to be knocked prone to loose concentration, my characters loose their concentration if someone so much as sneezes in their direction. Yes Shadowheart, I am dissing you. More like Cravenheart.

well the check is if you got knocked prone or not :P

i know if im tripping over my concentration is instantly gone and focused on breaking my fall so i don't injure myself. might not be 100% 5e rules but it makes sense to me.

Well rules are quite clear on that. The only conditions that can end concentration are incapacitated and unconscious. Prone is not on the list.
The other option is to take damage and roll a constitution check.

So the only way to break concentration on prone is if the action that made you prone also dealt damage and you failed the check.

Anything other than that is houserule.

The only answer is: prone should not break concentration but does. I'm not sure whether it's a conscious decision by Larian (not sure why?) or simply some unintended feature they haven't bothered fixing (hoping they'll fix it).

Is your concentration as gone as it would be if, say, you were just shot with a crossbow? The fact that you don't even get a save implies that your concentration is harder to keep while falling over than when you are electrocuted to the verge of unconsciousness. As someone who has kept a beer (mostly) upright while falling over, I guess I must be tougher than any adventurer ever to grace the Forgotten Realms.

Yes it does, hover over the icon when your character becomes prone
