Autosave is trash.
I love this game but i just cant get over how garbage the autosave system is. Just finished the fight with the Gith inquisitor and was immediately pulled into a cutscene. Had a conversation with the Gith queen that ended with her just insta wiping my whole party (thats what i get for taunting a god i guess) and of course my last save was near the beginning of the area so i lost nearly an hour of progress to something i could have had no clue would happen. I try to quicksave as much as possible but im only human and i forget sometimes. Why on earth is this such a big issue in this otherwise nearly perfect game...

It's called "Hit F5 at regular intervals." because your choices have consequences, such as the aforementioned character Wishing you out of existance.

Now that you have learned this lesson, hit F5 more often.
Its true. Sometimes it triggers 4 times a minute or 1 time every 3 hrs

Gaming 101, never rely on autosaves, they are intended to save at specific intervals/times/events not whenever you want them too. Make use of manual and quicksaves.

yeah. F5 is your friend. Autosave is always done when it's too late.

You can edit the amount of quicksaves that are stored.
Standard is 15. You can increase it up to 50.

its called theres an autosave feature, and it should be useful. im well aware of the quicksave feature and i use it often but sometimes i forget and im not the only one.
couldn't you run a macro that inputs f5 every five minutes or something

And the auto save did its intended job, saved when you came into a new area. Calling something bad because it doesn't do what you want it to do because there are TWO other ways to save at specific points in the way you want is beyond stupid.

User issues, skill issue. This is a YOU problem.

The Autosave is bad.

The fact that there are other ways to save doesn't change that. The point of Autosave is LITERALLY so you don't lose a ton of progress if you forget to save. Hours between autosaves means it's not serving it's purpose.

Honestly if I walk into any red danger zone instant f5 lol I also save before I walk into anything that seems dangerous in the first place, I agree auto save sucks but I have learned to use F5 as an auto save. If it feels like I could be in a fight I try to save it incase I wipe so I don't have to redo an hour of work.

You can save mid-combat. Mid-conversation. Mid-skillcheck. Literally any time. If occasionally pressing F5 is beyond you that's your problem.

I'm also not a fan of the whole "trigger the first time the player enters this area". While I've never experienced a CtD, it's a common issue with PC games, and explorers may be engrossed in an area for quite a while, not focused on quicksaving, before encountering something ending the journey (like a CtD).

Constantly taking a moment to remember to press F5 or whatever it is pulls some people out of the game for just a moment but long enough to break the stride of the experience.

A periodic autosave would help people like that.

"Lose potential hours of progress because you did not hit F5" is objectively bad design. its as simple as that. I LITERALLY SAID ITS A ME PROBLEM AND I FORGOT lol who are you arguing with man. its just an all around ♥♥♥♥ feeling when you are wiped instantly due to a dialogue choice after being pulled into a cutscene with no chance to save beforehand. the game gives you a chance to save after a "difficult" fight 9/10 times so when it doesnt it feels like garbage.

How often is often enough for you, though? A save is a stutter, momentary greyout, momentary fps drop. I don't want the game to constantly randomly stutter on me autosaving. If I want saves more often I can press F5 whenever. I don't want constant interruptions to my flow of play.

Constant autosaves every few minutes is a feature found in games where manual saves don't exist. They exist here, they are not needed here.

I do have sympathy with the OP because that's the only conversation I've come across so far that had instant death from picking the wrong options. Luckily I had saved just prior to speaking to the inquisitor so only had to replay the fight.

Autosave is terrible. Saves before areas likely to kill you and that's it. Needs to save after 'boss' fights too. I have taken to F5 after every fight.
