If you start a conversation with whatever is down there it threatens you, though whether it actually appears I do not yet know. I want to clear up the Mushroom quest first then make a marker save that I can go back to if I feel like getting whatever is there to appear... if it does, who knows.

If I recall correctly, that Demon was a Balor, a Balor, at this level, would wreck the party in no time...
Balor was like level 10 or higher in BG2... the party at this point in Act 1 is maybe level 5-6.
Respectable enemies back in the day. But magic was way more potent back then as it is now (as was the gear), and it was not quite as much of a challenge as it may seem on paper for a balanced party.
