SPOILER WARNING I GUESS
The eye opening part was the fight saving the last 2 caravan guys in the cave. The first attempt my Paladin got shot to pieces charging outside and it spiraled out of control from there. The next one I fought further inside the cave, drawing them in. Basically Paladin and Shadowheart were melee + board and tanked. My Paladin, Wyll, and Gale took the boss down first and worked their way through the NPCs. Between my Paladin and Shadowheart, their healing was on overdrive, as well as burning through heal potions. You had to work in dealing with the focus fire.
I'm sure there's better ways to do this.
Yeah but they just used dimension door in BG1/2. At least it's consistent in that regard.
5E, MM / MotM --
Gnoll witherlings -- CR 1/4, two bite or two club attacks.
Gnoll hunter -- CR 1/2, two bite, spear or longbow attacks.
Gnoll flesh gnawers, CR 1, one bite and two shortsword attacks.
Gnoll pack lord, CR 2, two glaive or longbow attacks + Incite Rampage.
Gnoll Fang of Yeenoghu, CR 4, two bite + one claw attack
They also get Rampage, where if they drop somebody to 0 hp with a melee attack on their turn they can use a bonus action to move up to half their movement and make a bite attack.
But, say, their attacks individually don't hit that hard -- e.g. the pack lord will do a total of 1d4 + 1d10 + 6 if it hits with both, avg 14; eg. CR 2 Hobgoblin Iron Shadow can punch you four times for a total of total of 4d4+12 or avg 22.
Or a CR 4 flameskull can fireball for 8d6, and next turn follow up with flaming sphere + 2x fire rays/turn.
I just tossed flaming crap at them and wiped them out, i am easy mode though..
