Same thing happened with Elden Ring which got bought by people that completely hated any kind of challenging gameplay
Buy things made for you
Based on everyone else before you who asked the same question: no.
There is ALWAYS a chance you could fall for the concept. Just because you dislike a gameplay mechanic from another game, it does not mean they did it as good as what you can find here. But in general they are always the same.
I absolutely do not recommend anyone to buy the game if they start with "I dislike turn-based". Because those people who start like that have often in common they are unable to see the bigger picture and therefor are incapable of understanding what ACTUALLY makes the system delightful and enjoyable.
But again: it happens often enough that under a well presented system and presentation people can fall for it. But most who start with "but I dislike..." are unlikely to give the system a proper chance, so it is like ALWAYS like a self-fulfilling prophecy "I knew I would not like it". Surely Americans have come up with a simple sounding name for that bias as well.
If you're not sure, what I'd do is not even look at any gameplay, but look up critical role or any other big DnD shows. If you like that, then you might like this. If you're not into DnD, you won't like this.
You might hate it as you expect or you might love it. Hard to say. Combat is explicitly turn-based though, there is no real-time with pause option.
If you don't have much turn-based or D&D experience, you might have a hard time enjoying this game.
But if you're really worried about the combat ruining the primarily story-driven game, I'd suggest not getting it full price. Wait a few years for a sale lol
If you don't like the combat in BG3, you're left with an RPG that has a restrictive camera, clunky party controls, and next to no inventory management. With mostly good writing.
At most, if you do decide to buy it, buy it on GoG so you get a 30 day refund window.
DOS2 would be a much better turn-based introduction
This is a Larian studio thing.
Try Trails series, its less complex and more story and character based with a political drama of fantasy rather than real world.

Nihon Falcom isn't done with their universe though, they still have Kuro no Kiseki 1+2 in Japan.
I will try the game on his pc before i decide.
