In my playthrough I did that, but then it said the cub was still scared of the goblins and wouldn't run unless the goblins were 'taken care of'.
I haven't seen the cub since then, since I ran inside to deal with the warband. I didn't realize it was something that could time expire. I thought since the goblin was so proud of the cub that it wouldn't have any trouble living til I got out to wipe out the war band.
Finally showed up, I don't know how many long rests it took, but geez! Well, at least I was able to get the adorable baby before I left Act 1 (Just about done in the Underdark. Surprisingly a lot of stuff to do down here.)
I met him in the 2nd act during a long rest in the camp. I slipped (did not throw) him food in the dialogue (without talking to the animals), he ran away. Maybe it should be, but the second time I did not see him.
