2) Companions can get the talk to animals capability and they can then talk to animals.

Could also play as a forest gnome I believe, they get speak with animals for being who they are, wood elves too I think.
Good news, you can actually kill two birds with one stone: Just have Shadowheart multiclass 1 level into Druid and give her a quarterstaff instead of her default mace. Now she can learn Speak with Animals AND she can cast Shillelagh so she can use her WIS modifier for attack/damage, making it so she can contribute to combat at the beginning of the game.
